     nlevels(x)

_D_e_s_c_r_i_p_t_i_o_n:

     `nlevels' returns the number of levels which its argu-
     ment has.  If the argument is not a `factor', `NA' is
     returned.

     The actual factor levels (if they exist) can be
     obtained with the `levels' function.

_E_x_a_m_p_l_e_s:

     nlevels(gl(3,7)) # = 3
