Announcement
************

GNUstep version 0.5.5 is now available.

What is GNUstep?
================

   GNUstep is a set of general-purpose Objective-C libraries based on
the OpenStep standard developed by NeXT (now Apple) Inc. The libraries
consist of everything from foundation classes, such as dictionaries and
arrays, to GUI interface classes such as windows, sliders, buttons, etc.

   There is more information available at the GNUstep homepage at
`http://www.gnustep.org/'.

What's new in this release?
===========================

   The currently released version is `0.5.5'.

Noteworthy changes in version `0.5.5'
=====================================

   NOTE that the X/DPS backend is not supported at all in this release.
Hopefully it will be fixed up in the next release. Too many changes to
mention in detail, but here is a list of a few:

   * Many base classes have been rewritten with tonnes of performance
     improvements that in many cases make it as fast as or faster than
     the NeXT implementation.

   * DO and archiving has received many improvements that help it work
     on a variety of different platforms.

   * Configuration and compilation has been greatly improved and fool
     proofed.

   * There are several new tools for handling services, defaults, and
     pasteboards.

   * A new X11 only gui backend was written, and the gui was much
     improved (probably an understatement). The X11 backend is the
     default now, until DGS gets improved.

Noteworthy changes in version `0.5.0'
=====================================

   * This is first release which has all of the core GNUstep libraries
     combined into a single package which allows configuring, making,
     and installing of all the core libraries with just a few commands.

Where can you get it? How can you compile it?
==============================================

   The gstep-core-0.5.5.tar.gz distribution file has been placed on
`ftp.gnu.org' in `pub/gnu/gstep'.

   It is also available at `ftp.gnustep.org' in
`pub/gnustep/core'. However, the is currently a limit on how much can
be downloaded from this site, so please try to download files from the
main GNU ftp site or alternative GNU sites.

   The `INSTALL' file contains instructions to configure, compile, and
install the core GNUstep libraries. The `GNUstep-HOWTO' contains
detailed instructions about how to install a complete GNUstep system.

   GNUstep requires GCC 2.8.0 or higher.

   The `.tar' file is compressed with GNU gzip. Gzip can be obtained by
anonymous ftp at any of the GNU archive sites.

   For info about FTP via email, send email to `ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com'
with no subject line, and two-line body with line one `help' and line
two `quit'.

   The most recent (not necessarily tested) snapshots of GNUstep will be
placed on `alpha.gnu.org' in `gnu/gnustep'.

Where do I send bug reports?
============================

   Bug reports can be sent to <bug-gnustep@gnu.org>.

Enjoy!

Obtaining GNU Software
======================

   Check out the GNU web site. (`http://www.gnu.org/')

   Check out the GNUstep web site. (`http://www.gnustep.org/')

   Most GNU software is packed using the GNU `gzip' compression program.
Source code is available on most sites distributing GNU software.

   For information on how to order GNU software on tape, floppy or
cd-rom, or printed GNU manuals, check the file etc/ORDERS in the GNU
Emacs distribution or in GNUinfo/ORDERS on prep, or e-mail a request to:
<gnu@gnu.org>

   By ordering your GNU software from the FSF, you help us continue to
develop more free software. Media revenues are our primary source of
support. Donations to FSF are deductible on US tax returns.

   The above software will soon be at these ftp sites as well. Please
try them before `ftp.gnu.org' as it is very busy!

   thanx <gnu@gnu.org>
